A number of prisons in the UK have installed self-service, touchscreen kiosks featuring a 3M MicroTouch System SCT7650EX interface and several means of preventing vandalism and accidents.
The touchscreen kiosks’ human machine interface (HMI) has optically-clear laminated glass-on-glass construction which meets EN/UL 60950-1 impact resistance safety standards. The design of the lamination also helps to isolate glass shards between the LCD and the touch surface if there is a breakage.
Graham Kemp, sales and marketing manager of interactive display solutions provider Nemacom, which supplied the kiosks, comments: “Our objective was to develop and implement a self-service touchscreen kiosk for the safe and secure delivery of key facilities to prisoners.
“In addition to improving service provision, of utmost importance was the product’s ability to withstand environments susceptible to accidental and malicious activity, as glass breakages can present a serious safety risk to both inmates and staff.”
In addition to the integrated 17″ 3M MicroTouch System SCT7650EX flat panel TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen, the SmartKiosk also features a PC, fingerprint reader and a 3″ thermal printer and is sealed to protect against dust and low-pressure water.
